Non-comedogenic Foundation

skincare in your 30s

Great skin care in your 20s is vital for great skin care in your 30s. A lot of young women skip this step, with the key word being: young. In our 20s we like to think we can get away with most skin-care no-nos. Like forgetting to apply SPF+ every morning, or wiping off make-up after a big night out.

As we age, the skin on our face is one of the first notable signs of aging. (A few grey hairs comes in close second). Our skin cell turnover slows right down and sun damage, pigmentation and lines are more permanent. Broken capillaries, post inflammatory pigmentation and sun spots can form. Collagen elasticity reduces, and our skin can appear more dehydrated and transparent. Adult acne is another blow, particularly if you’re coming off the contraceptive pill, have fallen pregnant or simply suffering work-induced anxiety.

If anyone finds a time machine, book me a seat – I want in.

Youthful skin can still be saved if not yet maintained. There is still hope! In this article we are going to focus on ‘non-comedogenic’ foundation. What it means and our favourite picks that are safe during pregnancy or when you are trying to conceive.

What Does Non-Comedogenic Mean?

  • Comedo = A blocked pore.
  • Comedones =  Blocked pores.

There are two types of comedones that you may be familiar with:

  • Open comedones (blackheads)
  • Closed comedones (whiteheads).

A product that is labelled as non-comedogenic has been formulated with ingredients that are less likely to clog pores and cause breakouts. Non-comedogenic foundation is suitable for all skin types and any age, so really, we should all be applying these products. For people with oily complexions, prone to breakouts, congestion, and acne, you should seriously be considering rehauling your beauty drawer if you’ve not yet done so.

Our Top Picks for Non-Comedogenic Foundation:

1. Bobbi Brown – Skin Long Wear Weightless Foundation + SPF

Bobbi Brown is renowed for light-weight, long wear foundation suitable for mature skin. With no animal testing, Paraben-free; phthalate-free, sulfate-free, sulfite-free, gluten-free and vegan, it’s evident why this is Bobbi Brown’s #1 best selling non-comedogenic foundation. The foundation glides beautifully onto the skin after priming with Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face Base – winner of Beauty Haven Australia’s ‘Best in Beauty Awards’ for 2020. “The Face Base is incredible. It is one of the most hydrating, non-clogging primers I have ever applied” – Clinic Manager, Nat

2. Perricone MD – No Makeup Foundation Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 20

Dr Nicholas Perricone is an American certified Dermatologist with his own skin care and make-up line, as well as a published author, celebrity doctor and businessman. His skin care range – particularly his Cold Plasma serums and creams are world famous for being the best

Perricone MD – No Makeup Foundation is a universal serum offered in six different shades. The serum is incredibly lightweight and provides a lighter coverage. If you prefer a BB cream over a full-face of foundation, this is the foundation for you. Just like Bobbi Brown, Perricone MD contains no nasties, is cruelty free and 100% vegan.

3. Maybelline – Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation

Don’t be put off by the fact that this is a pharmacy sold foundation. Maybelline Fit Me is one of the most – if not the most – popular discount foundation. With a 4.3 star rating review and an average price point of $15.00AUD, it’s no wonder Australian women are using this as a substitute during the work-week – and saving the higher priced foundations for the weekend. The colour range is on par with higher end foundations like NARS and MAC.

“Fit Me was a surprise winner for me. I certainly didn’t expect a foundation with a cheap price tag to last an entire day. This truly does. I apply on top of my primer and set with my MAC Studio Fix pressed powder. Fit Me has never caused me to breakout, which is surprising because it does contain the nasties that we don’t like to read in our products. I would recommend this foundation for teenagers and up to the age of early 30s. Beyond this, I believe we need to start looking at formulas like Bobbi Brown’s and Estee Lauder for mature-aged skin” Nat

4. By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-Foundation

“This is my favvvvvvourite foundation on the market. Vegan friendly, SPF 30 and packed with Hyaluronic Acid (HA) so it is super hydrating for mature aged skin – and makes the skin absolutely glow! It’s more on the expensive end of the scale, but definitely worth the purchase if you’re looking for a foundation for special occasions” – Nat

5. The Body Shop – Matte Clay Skin Clarifying Foundation

Again, not to be fooled by the price point – The Body Shop’s Matte Clay Skin Clarifying Foundation is perfect for anyone seeking a medium-full coverage non-comedogenic foundation that both 100% vegan and cruelty free.

The Matte Clay range comes in ten different shades and is enriched with tea-tree oil. This is important to note, that although the The Body Shop states this foundation is for all skin types – it’s certainly not. If you find you suffer from dry skin, or flare ups of ezcema and dermititis – this is not the range for you. Tea Tree oil is used in many skin products to help kill active acne. The Matte Clay range is beneficial for oily skin, and is okay to use on mature skin – just be sure to add a really nice layer of hydrating moisturiser before applying.
