Ovarian Cysts

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac formed in or on the ovaries. They are quite common and usually develop during ovulation. Do you ever suffer from mid-cycle cramps? This is likely to be an attribute of ovulation, or an ovarian cyst.

Many women with ovarian cysts don’t have symptoms and become quite concerned that no symptoms mean it could be an underlying sinister condition. Be assured that cysts are usually harmless. Always trust your body and seek an opinion from your trusted gynaecologist. We can assist by examining you by a pelvic ultrasound here in our rooms, as well as investigate your hormone profiles through standard blood testing.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts:

• Pressure and swelling. Pain in the lower abdomen correlating to which side has the ovarian cyst.
• Pelvic pain
• Dull ache in the lower back and thighs
• Problems emptying the bladder or bowel completely
• Pain during sex
• Unexplained weight gain
• Pain during your period
• Unusual (not normal) vaginal bleeding
• Breast tenderness
• The urge to urinate more often

If a cyst ruptures, it can cause sudden and severe pain.

A commonly asked question is whether ovarian cysts can affect the chances of getting pregnant. Typically no, however if you also suffer from endometriosis or PCOS combined with ovarian cysts can roadblock your journey to conception. We strongly recommend you see a gynaecologist or fertility specialist if you’ve had no success conceiving whilst trying for 12 months.

Our bodies are amazing vessels! Be kind to your body, know your body, trust your body, and book in with your doctor when your body is telling you it needs help.
