SPF – The ABC of Skincare

Suncreen SPF 50+ skincare routine

When we talk about the ABC of skincare it’s rather simple. We are going right back to the basics – the ABC of skincare is SPF.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number we see next to SPF demonstrates the length of time skin it would take for your skin to burn with sunscreen versus if you have not applied sunscreen. For example, an SPF 30+ means skin will take thirty times longer to burn in the sun than if no sunscreen is applied at all. The higher the SPF, the longer sunscreen will continue to protect the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. In Australia, we are starting to see more sunscreens and make-up foundations with a SPF 50+ which is fantastic. We also should emphasise that it is a must to see the words zinc oxide on your purchase as this ingredient is vital for sun protection to work.

Sunscreen should be a non-negotiable addition to your skincare routine. It is the first point of action for supple, healthy skin and will fight against early onset pigmentation from UVA and UVB rays. It should be applied every morning after washing your face and after applying any serums or AM moisturisers. Sunscreen should be applied prior to your make-up, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to double up your sunscreen with an SPF infused foundation.

What Sunscreen is On Our Skin? Our Staff Picks:

Mecca Cosmetica – To Save Face SPF50+

This is our clinic manager Natalie’s go-to sunscreen for her Monday to Friday routine. Lightweight, un-tinted and non-comedogenic, “I love To Save Face. It absorbs beautifully into my skin and acts as a lovely primer underneath my foundation. It’s ideal for my job as I am not out in the sun too often on weekdays.” – Nat

Dermalogica – Invisible Physical Defense SPF30+

We love the Dermalogica sunscreen range. The formula has been made with all skin types in mind, so this is the ideal sun barrier for oily and normal-combination type skin. A great option for anyone working with blue-light (is anyone not working in front of a computer these days?) – Physical Defense helps build a barrier against these invisible rays. Infused with green-tea and the formulation helps brighten the skin and reduce redness.

Perricone MD Vitamin C Ester Photo-brightening Moisturiser

“I have been obsessed with Perricone MD products since first discovering the product range back in 2013. What makes this sunscreen so incredible is the infusion of vitamin C to help brighten the skin and minimise the appearance of discolouration.” Definitely worth the price tag – but if you’re wanting this one to last, substitute it during the week with cost effective alternative if you are working indoors. Bring out the Perricone on weekends, applying it prior to Sunday brunch or a day trip to the coast.” Nat
